The Book Club will meet this Friday, March 4 from 3:50 to 4:20 in the LRC. To celebrate Women's History Month (March) and Black History Month (February) our selection is "A Wall of Fire Rising," a short story by Edwidge Danticat. Danticat grew up in Haiti and emigrated to the U.S. in 1981. Danticat's collection entitled
Krik? Krak? was published in 1995, and earned Danticat a finalist for the National Book Award at age 26.
Some questions for thought, before we meet:
- What is "the revolution"? Who is Boukman? (You can look this up.)
- How do Little Guy's play lines affect his father? what do they mean to his father? What do they mean to Little Guy at the end of the story?
- Were you surprised by the ending? What does a balloon usually symbolize? How does Danticat play with the symbol of the balloon?
