High School: What are you reading?
What books have you read lately that you've really loved? Write a review here to recommend your favorite book to others! Don't forget to tell us the author and title, and whether you got it in the PSM LRC...
"Beyond Readers" High School Book Club
The Book Club will meet this Friday, March 4 from 3:50 to 4:20 in the LRC. To celebrate Women's History Month (March) and Black History Month (February) our selection is "A Wall of Fire Rising," a short story by Edwidge Danticat. Danticat grew up in Haiti and emigrated to the U.S. in 1981. Danticat's collection entitled Krik? Krak? was published in 1995, and earned Danticat a finalist for the National Book Award at age 26.
Some questions for thought, before we meet:
Some questions for thought, before we meet:
- What is "the revolution"? Who is Boukman? (You can look this up.)
- How do Little Guy's play lines affect his father? what do they mean to his father? What do they mean to Little Guy at the end of the story?
- Were you surprised by the ending? What does a balloon usually symbolize? How does Danticat play with the symbol of the balloon?
